Case Study – CSL tread safely with tyre handling system

Conveyor Systems Ltd (CSL) was awarded a contract to design and install a heavy-duty materials handling system for a leading tyre manufacturer. The system, designed for safety and efficiency, transports inbound lorry tyres in steel cages during the tread stripping process.

Tyres are placed onto one of six heavy-duty twin chain-driven conveyors, each with its drive zone and light curtains to protect operatives. Forklift trucks load cages onto the conveyors, triggering a safety system that halts the in-feed when cages are positioned. The system accommodates cages weighing up to 650kg and ensures safe, accurate positioning with guides and automatic safety reactivation.

At the discharge end, a heavy-duty trolley car transports full cages for retreading. The trolley features a pneumatic tilting device to present tyres ergonomically for removal. After emptying, cages are returned via outfeed conveyors, with the light curtain ensuring safety throughout. The system operates 24/7, providing reliability and durability, with CSL’s proven track record ensuring smooth operation.
