CEF & CSL: Innovating Together for Sustainable Growth

City Electrical Factors (CEF), a leading electrical wholesaler, sought to enhance its online business, CEF Online, by automating its distribution centre in Biggleswade. CSL designed and installed advanced systems for a 100,000 sq. ft facility, adding 49,000 sq. ft of mezzanine space. Phase 1 involved creating an efficient goods-in area, integrating Interroll 24v motorised roller conveyors, and installing Ambaflex spiral lifts for order picking and dispatch.

To improve packing efficiency, CSL introduced the CVP Impack automated packing machine, which increased packing speed to 450 boxes per hour and reduced packaging waste.

In Phase 2, CSL expanded the system for a 200,000 sq. ft facility, incorporating additional CVP machines, and enhancing stock and throughput capacity. These machines used 3D scanning for fit-to-size packaging, reducing waste and supporting sustainability.

Despite challenges, including the heavy installation of 8-tonne machines, CSL innovatively ensured structural integrity. Nick Savage from CEF praised CSLā€™s seamless execution and excellent customer service. With over 1.6 km of conveyors, 7 spirals, and 5 goods lifts, the project reflects a successful and growing partnership focused on efficiency and sustainability.
