Interfloor Conveyor System for The Works new DC

The Works, Hams Hall, Birmingham. Brand new DC facility.

The Brief

To provide an inter-floor floor product pick and packing conveyor system to handle tote product bins. The system needs to identify and transfer the totes to the relevant mezzanine floor if further product picking is required to fulfil an order, eventually arriving at ground floor level for packing. The client required the solution to be cost-effective and provide 12 months of project payback.

Our Solution

Conveyor Systems Ltd (CSL) collaborated with mezzanine contractor Link51 to create a cost-effective design that integrated seamlessly with the new mezzanine floor while minimizing storage space impact.

After evaluating different options, CSL chose cascading decline conveyor belts to meet the customer’s budget and operational needs. Orders start on the third mezzanine floor, where products are added to a tote and placed on the first decline conveyor. At each floor, barcode scanning and product retrieval are performed. If no items are needed from a floor, the tote moves to the next belt.

On the ground floor, a picker collects the final items for packing, where products are packed, labeled, and placed on the dispatch conveyor for palletizing and courier collection.

A spokesperson from The Works praised the CSL system for enhancing their eCommerce fulfillment, enabling accurate, efficient, and fast order delivery to their growing customer base.
