Automation projects are complex. Working with the right automation partner shouldn’t be.

When designing an automated warehouse or fulfilment operation, attention naturally focuses on conveyors, sortation, robotics and software.

But one of the simplest components can have a major impact on system performance: the tote bin.

The right tote can improve efficiency, protect products and help automation run reliably. The wrong tote can create handling problems, product damage, jams and unnecessary downtime.

Not all tote bins are the same

Totes come in a wide range of sizes, materials, designs and configurations. The most appropriate option depends on what you’re handling and how it will move through your operation.

Key considerations include:

  • Size and dimensions – The tote needs to suit the products while making efficient use of conveyor and storage space.
  • Weight capacity – Totes must safely handle the maximum product weight without deforming or becoming difficult for automation to move.
  • Base design – A flat, rigid and suitable base is particularly important for conveyor systems, rollers and automated handling equipment.
  • Product protection – The tote should provide appropriate protection from impact, movement and contamination.
  • Stackability – If totes are stored or transported in stacks, their design needs to provide stability and maximise available space.
  • Identification – Barcodes, RFID or other identification methods can be incorporated to support automated tracking and inventory control.
  • Automation compatibility – Not every tote is suitable for every conveyor, sorter, robot or storage system.

Why the right tote matters

A well-designed tote provides a consistent handling unit for your automation system. This can make products easier to convey, sort, store, pick and transport throughout the warehouse.

Standardising tote dimensions can also simplify system design and improve reliability, particularly where totes need to pass through multiple stages of an automated process.

Conversely, poorly selected totes can result in unstable loads, conveyor jams, failed scans, damaged products and reduced throughput.

Get the tote right from the start

Tote selection should be considered as part of the overall automation design, not as an afterthought.

At CSL Automation, we take an equipment-agnostic approach to system design, considering the products, processes, technology and future requirements together. We work with the very best tote bin providers and can offer our expert advice on which one(s) we feel will work best for you.

Whether you’re introducing automation for the first time or upgrading an existing operation, choosing the right tote can make a significant difference to the performance and reliability of the entire system.

The right tote isn’t just a container. It’s an integral part of the automation system.
