FAQ: Conveyor and Automation Maintenance

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page. This is your go-to resource for all queries related to the maintenance and continued smooth running of conveyor and automation systems. We’ve compiled answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about maintaining these systems in your warehouse or distribution centre. Remember, if you have a question that’s not addressed on this page, don’t hesitate to contact us directly.

How often should I have my conveyor system serviced?
The frequency of servicing depends on several factors including the type of conveyor, its usage intensity, dependency, environmental conditions, and manufacturer recommendations. As a general guideline, it’s recommended to schedule regular servicing every 6 months or less to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your conveyor system. CSL can advise on a schedule for a maintenance program specific to your system and your needs.

Why should I hold spare parts for my conveyor system?

Holding spare parts for your conveyor system is crucial for minimising downtime and ensuring continuous operation. In the event of a component failure, having spare parts readily available allows for quick replacements, reducing the impact on production schedules and preventing costly delays. It also eliminates the need to wait for parts to be ordered, shipped, and delivered, thus improving overall efficiency and responsiveness to maintenance needs. Even if your system has been recently installed and is under the manufacturers warranty it’s still advisable to hold spare parts of the key elements. Our aftersales team can help provide a bespoke list of recommended spares to keep in stock to ensure the smooth running of your operations.

How long will a service on my conveyor system take?

The duration of a service on your conveyor system can vary depending on factors such as the size and complexity of the system, the scope of the service required, and any additional repairs or adjustments needed. A routine maintenance service typically takes between a few hours up to a full week. Our technicians strive to minimise downtime and disruption to your operations while ensuring thorough servicing to maintain peak performance. CSL will provide an update and will send reminders before the scheduled maintenance so you can make arrangements, inform your workforce in order to minimise any disruption. Work can also be carried out over a weekend or nightshifts.

Do I need to shut down operations when a conveyor service is being done?

While it’s ideal to schedule conveyor servicing during planned downtime to minimise disruption to operations, it’s not always necessary to shut down operations entirely. Conveyor Systems Ltd understands the importance of maintaining production continuity, and we strive to accommodate your scheduling needs to minimise downtime as much as possible.

In many cases, routine maintenance tasks can be performed while the conveyor system is still operational, especially if the servicing involves visual inspection, lubrication, or minor adjustments. However, for more extensive repairs or upgrades that require significant disassembly or may pose safety risks to personnel, it would be appropriate to temporarily suspend operations to ensure the safety of both our technicians and your employees.

Our goal is to work collaboratively with you to develop a servicing plan that meets your operational requirements while ensuring the integrity and reliability of your conveyor system. We’ll discuss the best approach with you in advance to minimise disruptions and optimise efficiency during the servicing process.

What preventive maintenance measures should we implement to ensure optimal conveyor performance and longevity?

Regularly inspecting conveyor components such as belts, rollers, bearings, universal joints and motors for signs of wear or damage.

  • Cleaning the conveyor system to remove debris and buildup that can cause jams or damage.
  • Lubricating moving parts according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Conducting alignment checks to ensure proper tracking and tension of the conveyor belt.

How often should we schedule routine maintenance checks for our conveyor systems?

Routine maintenance checks should be scheduled at regular intervals, typically quarterly or bi-annually, depending on the conveyor usage and environmental conditions. More frequent checks may be necessary for high-volume operations or harsh environments. CSL can advise on the best frequency for your system and usage to ensure it keeps running smoothly.

What are the most common causes of conveyor downtime, and how can we prevent them?

Common causes of conveyor downtime include belt misalignment, bearing failures, material jams, and motor issues. Preventive measures such as regular maintenance, proper training for operators, and installing sensors for early detection can help prevent downtime.
